Description

Viking brooch in Jelling style from the Viking age.
This expressive replica of an openwork Viking fibula from the 10th century was made after the discovery of Morberg from the South Norwegian province of Buskerud. Morberg’s Viking Age fibula, also known as the tortoise brooch or oval brooch, is made of high-quality bronze and carefully polished.

Dimensions oval fibula: 8.4 x 5.3 x 1.9 cm.

The back of the turtle brooch has a sturdy needle, so the brooch is also suitable for heavy wool clothing. In addition, the turtle toad fibula has an eye where the Viking lady can hang her chains.

Morberg’s tortoise fibula was found in Buskerud County in Southern Norway and is now in the Historical Museum in Oslo. The design of the Morberg oval brooch is typical of the so-called Jelling style, which dominated the art of the Vikings in the 10th century. Such fibulae were an integral part of Vikings’ womenswear. The  fibula, worn in pairs under the right and left shoulders, was used to attach the apron to the surcoat.

The turtle fibula was always worn in pairs in the Viking age. It is therefore advisable to order two pieces. Price here is per set of 2.

From 500 to 1000 AD, the shell fibula (oval fibula, tortoise fibula) was an indispensable part of women’s costumes in Northern Europe. And so komfibulae are often found in Viking-era women’s graves, with the respective version providing information about the wearer’s social status.

The komfibula is the most numerous type of fibula and can be found in finds from Ireland to the Volga. In addition to cheap mass products and poorly cast copies, there were also filigree, gilded oval brooches made of the highest quality silver. Whether cheap or expensive – the shell fibula has always been used in pairs to attach the shoulder straps of the outer garment. Often one or more necklaces were worn on top of each other between the oval brooches, which are sometimes fastened in the middle of the chest with a round brooch or cloverleaf brooch. On these necklaces the woman carried everything she needed to have on hand: toiletries, scissors, a needle case and other items.
