Turtle brooch or oval brooch in Jelling style for the women’s costume of the Viking era.
Expressive replica of a openwork Viking brooch from the 10th century based on an original find by Morberg from the southern Norwegian province of Buskerud.

The replica of the Viking Age brooch by Morberg, also known as the turtle brooch or oval brooch, is cast from bronze and elaborately polished.

There is a stable needle on the back of the Morberg turtle brooch, so the brooch is also suitable for clothing made of heavy wool. In addition, the brooch is provided with an eye into which the Viking lady can hang her chains.

The Morberg brooch was found in the province of Buskerud in southern Norway and is now in the History Museum in Oslo. The design of the oval brooch by Morberg is typical of the so-called Jelling style, which dominated the art of the Vikings in the 10th century.

Such brooches were an integral part of women’s clothing in the Viking Age. The turtle brooch was worn in pairs under the right and left shoulders, and the apron was attached to the Viking women’s clothing.

Dimensions of the oval brooch: 8.4 x 5.3 x 1.9 cm.

The shell brooch was always worn in pairs. It is therefore advisable to order two pieces.

A comprehensive treatise on these kind of brooches can be found in Jan Petersen’s famous publication “Vikingetide smykker” from 1928.
