The button appeared very late in Europe and was mediated by oriental influences via the trade routes of long-distance drivers across the Mediterranean to the north, but was still hardly widespread before the mid-13th century. The button was often spherical in the Middle Ages, but flat buttons were also common. The medieval buttons were not provided with holes, but had a small eyelet on the back with which you could sew the button on the robe. In the Middle Ages, the buttons were often made of tin, but buttons made of brass, bronze and even silver were also found. Unlike today, the button was attached to the hem of the robe in the Middle Ages and closed on the opposite side with an eyelet.
